
Stop the Shards: Dealing with Lamp Bursts in IR Heating
If you’re running high-load wafer production, you know the nightmare. One lamp bursts, and suddenly your entire line is dead. It’s not just the downtime that kills you—it’s the mess. Quartz shards and metallic bits everywhere, raining down on your silicon wafers. One pop and you’ve lost a massive batch. It’s a disaster. How we keep things from blowing up
Most quartz tubes give up when the thermal stress gets too high or they take a physical hit. To fix that, we use high-purity fused quartz. We’ve spent a lot of time getting the wall thickness just right for the wattage you’re actually using. By keeping a close eye on how the material expands, we stop that internal tension from building up when you’re ramping up the heat quickly. But we don’t just rely on the glass. We wrap the heating element in a protective containment sleeve. Think of it as an insurance policy. If the inner lamp does crack or burn out, the sleeve catches everything. The fragments stay put. Your wafers stay clean. You get a physical wall between your product and a potential catastrophe.
Managing the heat
The ends of the lamps are where the real trouble starts. That’s where the heat is most intense, and it’s usually where “end-pinch” failures happen—basically, the glass cracks right at the seal. We use reinforced electrodes to stop that from happening. One quick tip: keep an eye on your power supply. If you push the voltage too hard, you’re just asking for a blowout and killing the life of your lamp. We always suggest a stepped power-up sequence. Just give the quartz a moment to expand naturally.
The trade-off
Here is the honest part. Adding sleeves and reinforced seals means you aren’t getting a “naked” lamp. You might see a 3-5% dip in raw heat throughput. Is that a problem? Not really. Compared to the chaos of a total line shutdown and contaminated wafers, a tiny bit of heat loss is a bargain. Your PID controllers can handle that offset without breaking a sweat. It’s a small price to pay for a good night’s sleep.
