
Making Bathroom Heaters That Won’t Blind You
When you’re putting an infrared heater in a bathroom ceiling, you’ve got a tricky balance to strike. You want that instant, cozy heat the second you step out of the shower, but you can’t have a lamp that feels like staring into the sun. It’s especially important for kids and babies. Their eyes are way more sensitive than ours, so we can’t just throw a standard heat lamp up there and call it a day.
Dealing with the Glare
Most industrial IR lamps blast out a harsh, blinding white light. It’s stressful on the eyes. To fix that, we use special quartz coatings and filtered filaments. Basically, we nudge the energy away from the visible light spectrum and kill off the harmful UV rays. You still get all the warmth, but without that “deer in the headlights” feeling. We push the energy into mid-to-long waves. It sinks into your skin to warm you up, but it doesn’t trigger that annoying glare in your eyes.
It’s All in the Shape
The housing isn’t just there to look pretty. We use deep-dish reflectors to point the heat exactly where it needs to go: down. By recessing the lamp into the ceiling, we create a physical shield. This means if you happen to look up, you aren’t staring directly at the glowing filament. The heat hits your shoulders, not your retinas.
The Trade-off
Here’s the catch. When you filter out the light to protect your eyes, you lose a bit of that “instant punch” you see in those big industrial drying lamps. To make up for it, we use higher-wattage filaments. It keeps the room feeling just as warm, but it does mean the unit pulls more power. Just a heads-up: make sure your bathroom wiring can handle the extra load. You don’t want to be shivering in the dark because you tripped a breaker in the middle of January.
