Getting Your Bathroom Heater Just Right
Picking the right wattage for an infrared lamp isn’t rocket science, but it does matter. If you go too big in a tiny room, you’re just throwing money away on electricity and risking a meltdown. Go too small? You’ll be standing there shivering, wondering why you bothered installing it in the first place. The trick is remembering that infrared doesn’t actually heat the air. It heats you. It’s like stepping into a patch of sunlight on a cold day.
Finding Your Fit
If you’ve got a small bathroom—think under 4 square meters—a 250W to 400W lamp is usually plenty. It gets you warm immediately without tripping your breakers. For those mid-sized bathrooms (around 4 to 8 square meters), I’d suggest bumping it up to 600W or 800W. Then you have the big rooms or places with those fancy high ceilings. For those, you’ll need 1000W or more. But here’s a pro tip: instead of one giant, scorching lamp, try two smaller ones. It stops those annoying “hot spots” and makes the whole room feel cozy and even.
The Steam Factor (and the Heat)
You’ll see “IP65” on the spec sheet. All that really means is that we’ve sealed everything up tight. Between the quartz glass and the heavy-duty gaskets, steam and moisture can’t get into the electronics. It’s a must-have for a bathroom. One thing to watch out for, though. More power means more heat on the lamp itself. If you cram a 1000W element into a tiny, tight space, the housing is going to take a beating. Give the fixture some room to breathe. If there’s no airflow, you’re looking at warped plastic or fried wiring. Not a great look.
Making it Efficient
The best part about infrared is that it’s instant. No waiting twenty minutes for a radiator to wake up. Because it’s so fast, don’t just leave it on. Hook it up to a timer or a motion sensor. It kicks in the second you walk in and stops the moment you leave. It’s way smarter than old-school heaters, and your electric bill will thank you.
