
Keeping Your Outdoor Heaters from Dying Early
If you’re putting infrared heaters on a patio or in a semi-outdoor spot, you should know that the heating elements usually aren’t what kill the machine. It’s the moisture. Specifically, condensation. We built our latest line to actually survive this stuff. We focused on anti-fog and splash-proof designs because, frankly, the outdoors are messy.
The battle with condensation
Here is how it happens: the heater shuts off, it cools down, and it starts pulling moisture right out of the air and onto the quartz tube. You get these little water spots or “fog.” The problem is that these spots create hot zones. When one part of the glass gets way hotter than the rest, it stresses the material. Then? It cracks. To stop that, we treated the tubes with a special coating. Instead of water clinging to the glass and pooling, it just beads up and rolls off. This keeps the heat steady across the whole lamp, which means no cracks and a much longer life.
Dealing with splashes
Most units fail because water sneaks into the electrical terminals. One unlucky rainstorm or a stray blast from a garden hose can short the circuit or rust the connectors. It’s a nightmare. We fixed this by beefing up the seals and gaskets where the wiring enters the unit. By bumping up the IP rating, we’ve basically put a wall between the moisture and the guts of the machine.
A quick heads-up on airflow
There is a trade-off here. Those protective seals and coatings are great for the rain, but they can change how the chassis breathes. You’ve got to make sure your mounting bracket gives the unit some room to breathe. If you cram it into a tight box, the internal temperature will spike, and you’ll fry your capacitors. We built these things to take a beating in damp weather. Just keep the vents clear, and you won’t have to deal with that annoying mid-season burnout.
