Why it’s time to ditch the old bathroom heat lamps
If you’re still using those old-school heat lamps in your bathroom, you know the drill. They’re basically just big bulbs that get hot. The problem? They aren’t really built for the steam and splashes of a real shower. They wear out, they corrode, and honestly, they’re a bit outdated. That’s why we’ve been moving toward waterproof infrared (IR) wall heaters. They actually belong in a humid room and won’t freak out the moment things get steamy.
Why you feel the warmth instantly
Here is the cool part about how this works. Most heaters try to warm up the air around you. But in a bathroom, the ventilation is usually sucking that warm air right out the window. It’s a losing battle. Infrared is different. It sends heat in a straight line—kind of like how the sun feels on your skin on a cold day. You don’t have to wait for the whole room to heat up. You just turn it on, andboom, you’re warm. It’s a total lifesaver when you’re stepping out of a hot shower into a chilly room.
The “behind the scenes” stuff
Since these live in the splash zone, we don’t just slap a plastic cover on them and call it a day. We use heavy-duty sealed gaskets and wiring that can actually handle moisture. The heating elements are made from quartz or halogen, so they can go from cold to scorching hot without cracking. But a quick heads-up: these things pull a lot of power to get that instant heat. If you’re putting one into an old house, please double-check your wiring. You don’t want your wires overheating because they can’t keep up with the power draw.
A few things to keep in mind
One thing I love is the size. They take up way less space than those clunky old radiators. You just wire them straight into the wall and you’re good to go. There is one catch, though. I call it the “shadow effect.” Because the heat travels in a straight line, if you stand behind a curtain or a wall, you won’t feel it. It’s line-of-sight. So, when you’re installing one, think about where you actually stand. Put it right where you’ll be shivering the most, and you’ll get the full effect.
