
Getting Smart Home Repairs Right with IR Heating
If you’ve ever tried to pull a component off a modern smart home board, you know the struggle. Everything is packed tight, and the adhesives are stubborn. One wrong move with a heat gun and you’ve ripped a pad right off the board. It’s a nightmare. That’s why we build our infrared (IR) heating lamps. We wanted to give small and mid-sized shops a way to get targeted heat exactly where it needs to be, without the usual stress.
Getting the Heat Right
We stick with shortwave IR. Why? Because it actually digs deep into the solder joints instead of just dancing around on the surface like convection heat does. Now, when you’re picking a lamp, keep an eye on the wattage-to-length ratio. That’s what controls your ramp-up time. More power means you hit reflow temperature faster. But be careful. If you go too hot in too small a space, you’ll toast the solder mask before the component leads even wake up. It’s a bit of a balancing act.
The Build
The filaments are housed in high-purity quartz glass. We use this because it doesn’t warp when things get scorching. Some of our lamps have a special coating that tweaks the emission spectrum. It’s a clever little detail that makes sure the heat hits the solder, not the plastic casing of the device. Plus, we use standard connectors. You can just slide them into your existing rigs and get back to work.
Real Talk: Using Them on the Floor
Getting these wired in is the easy part. The heat, however, is aggressive. If you’re running these at full blast, make sure your ventilation can actually keep up with the room temperature. We’ve also seen too many tubes burn out early because a cooling fan died or—my favorite—someone touched the quartz with oily fingers during install. Please, keep the glass clean. Grab a lint-free cloth and some IPA. If you leave smudges, you get hot spots, and hot spots kill tubes. At the end of the day, we’re giving you the same build quality you’d find from the big-name brands, just without the corporate markup.
