
Keeping Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe and Dry
Putting infrared lamps in a bathroom is a bit of a gamble if you aren’t careful. You’ve got steam everywhere and constant moisture in the air. Since water and electricity are a dangerous mix, a tiny leak in your insulation can lead to a short circuit or a ground fault pretty quickly. We build our lamps to handle this. The Battle Against Leaks
The real danger zone is where the quartz glass meets the end caps. That’s where moisture loves to sneak in. To stop that, we use reinforced ceramic insulators and high-temp silicone seals. It basically creates a wall that keeps the dampness away from the electrode connections. We also put these units through the wringer with voltage spike tests. You want to know that if there’s a surge, the lamp isn’t going to just give up. We use double-insulated wiring and IP-rated housings because, at the end of the day, the best way to keep water away from live terminals is to make sure it can’t get in there in the first place.
Heat vs. Humidity
Shortwave lamps are great because they heat up instantly. That quick blast of warmth actually helps by drying the lamp’s surface and shaking off condensation. But there’s a catch. If you go with a super high-wattage lamp in a tiny, unvented space, all that concentrated heat can actually bake your seals until they degrade. It’s all about balance. Pick a wattage that fits your room size so you aren’t accidentally cooking your own gaskets.
Getting the Wiring Right
Please, don’t use standard PVC cables. They’ll get brittle, crack, and fail. Instead, go with silicone-jacketed leads—they can take the heat and the humidity without flaking out. And for the love of everything, make sure your grounding is tight. A waterproof lamp is great, but it’s only as safe as the circuit it’s plugged into. We always suggest using a GFCI breaker or an RCD. Think of it as your safety net. If the insulation ever wears down after years of battling steam, the breaker trips and keeps you safe.
